The cement sector has developed rapidly in Syria recently as a result of two factors; population increase, which means increase consumption of cement; and increased urbanization, which is manifested in the need for more residential units and infrastructure in terms of energy, education and health.

The Syrian market relies on both locally produced and imported cement to meet its needs. In 2011, consumption amounted to approximately 10 million tons annually, compared with approximately 8.5 million tons in 2010, i.e. a 20% increase.

Total annual cement production capacity in Syria by both the private and public sectors is approximately 10 million tons, of which Lafarge produces 3 million tons annually.

Sector and Market Overview

Although there is no official statistics about the size of the cement Syrian market, we expect the current annual consumption to be 9.5 to 10 Million ton, knowing that LCS’s nominal production capacity is 3 Million ton per year, which represent around one third of the country consumption.

Cement Main Consumers are:

Health & Safety for cement users

Precautions:
Direct contact with wet cement should be avoided. If contact occurs, the skin should be washed with water as soon as possible. Exposure can cause serious, potentially irreversible tissue destruction in the form of chemical (caustic) burns.  If cement gets into the eyes, immediately rinse thoroughly with water and seek medical attention.
